2011 - Successful tournaments and prepare for the future

Henri started his season in the end January in Germany. Right from the first matches the work he had done in the off season showed off.

The plan for Henri was to play 3-4 Challenger events in February, but he ended up playing only two as he was showing signs of problems with his right wrist. Soon after he was diagnosed with a repetitive strain injury that forced him out of competition until summer. This time Henri spend working hard on his fitness and also joined the Davis Cup team for their trip to Slovenia in March.

Henri was able to get back on court in the beginning of June and played his first tournament later that month on the grass courts in England. He had another successful return to competition as he won two matches coming back from a match point down and got some much need matches under his belt. As the summer processed, Henri started to find his form back. In his home tournament in Tampere he reached the semifinals of singles as well as doubles which he played for the first time in professional event with his brother Micke.

From the clay courts of Tampere Henri moved to the hard courts of Segovia, Spain where he continued his fine form. In the first round he hit 21 aces and beat Kenny De Schepper who had recently played in the main draw of Wimbledon. Next round Henri beat an inform Spanish player Roberto Bautista-Agut. Karol Beck, who was ranked 93 in the world at that moment, proved to be a too tough task for Henri in the quarterfinals.

In September Henri played a thrilling match in the St. Remy Challenger event against a former Top-40 player Nicolas Mahut (FRA), also known as the "Marathon Man" (from his record long match against John Isner in Wimbledon 2010). Even though Henri lost this match 6-7 in the third set, it was good preparation for the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Poland.

The tie, which was played in an ice-hockey arena in Espoo, started in the best possible way for Henri and the Finnish squad as he put the team in front with a fine win against Jerzy Janowicz on Friday. After Jarkko Nieminen also won his singles, had the home team gotten a perfect start for the weekend. On Saturday Henri and Jarkko faced of in doubles against Fyrstenberg/Matkowski who had just played in the final of the Us Open. The Finnish duo showed no signs that they were counted as underdogs on paper coming into the match and to thrill of a supportive home crowd they beat the Top-8 pair in the world in straight sets. With this win the Finnish team secured their place in the first group for 2012. It should also be mentioned that from their eight last ties the Finnish team have won six with Henri being in the team for the same six (he has missed two because of injuries). So it is no secret that as much as Henri loves playing Davis Cup, the team loves having him with them as it has played a big role in their success.

In the end of September Henri was looking forward to continuing his fine form from Davis Cup to the indoor events in Europe, but unfortunately another injury put the handbrake on for his rise. Henri had been troubled by a jumpers knee for nearly one and a half years and felt that even though he could have played out the season with slight pains that it was better to try to get the knee 100% so he could start the next season from a fresh table. Henri underwent surgery in Helsinki and so far the rehabilitation has gone well and he is already back on court. He is hoping to be back in full force on court early in January and if all goes well he might play his first tournament later that month or in February.

Time will tell what happens. But one thing is for sure; Henri will come back hungry as ever in 2012 to prove himself where he really belongs in the rankings.

Year 2010 - Injuries and Impressive Comebacks

At the start of his second year as a professional, Henkka was ranked 290 in singles. First, Henkka played at ATP qualifications in Doha, Qatar. After that, Henri went to the boiling heat of Oceania and it was the first adult Grand Slam-qualifications of his career, Australian Open. January was not quite as good as could have been hoped for, but these new and challenging places to play are probably going to be useful experience for the future.

In February after Australia, it was time to start climbing up the ranking list, and this happened by winning the Futures title in Bosnia-Herzegovina. This was a good starting point for the next stop in Poland, where an important Davis Cup match took place. On Friday in singles, the top 50 ranked player Lukasz Kubot was better off, likewise with the doubles defendant on Saturday, but the Sunday's decisive singles turned out to be an unforgettable event in Henkka's career. After Jarkko Nieminen had beaten Kubot, Henri had a chance to gain a DC match to Finland. Kontinen won Michal Przysiezny 6-4, 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5. In the fourth set, Henkka was already losing 1-4, so it certainly was one of the peaks of the season when he eventually made it to the victory. What makes this all the more significant is the fact that Henkka got a rupture in his abdominal in the fourth set.

In March, the week after Davis Cup, the unfortunate abdomen injury was discoreved, and that kept Henkka away from the playcourts for six weeks, up to the end of April. His comeback was, however, successful, as he managed to win some tough competitors in ATP Challenger in Rhodos. The trip to South Africa during the first week of May was less fortunate as Finland lost the DC match and Henkka could not play at all because of a rupture in his angle ligament. This kept him away from playcourts again for six weeks. Henkka did another impressive comeback and this time, on grass court. Having received the wild card for the Netherlands ATP, Henkka won a main draw match at the ATP level for the first time in his career. In summer, the claycourt season was about to start, but the third injury of the year smashed the hopes of success again. This time, it was about a knee injury that took two months to heal.

One more time, he made a magnificent comeback, the third of the year. He won  two titles in September, in Sweden Futures, gaining 54 ATP points in total. In October in Rennes ATP Challengers, Henkka played skillfully, winning Lukas Rosol in the main draw. In Stockholm ATP qualifications, Mathias Bachinger worked as a brick wall for Henkka, but in doubles, Henkka won a tough German pair Berrer / Becker, playing with Micahel Ryderstedt. Before the end of the year, he still had a couple CH-tournaments ahead of him. In Great Britain, Henkka achieved the doubles title together with the Dane Frederik Nielsen. In the finals, the Nordic pair won the top 100 ranked pair Jordan Kerr/Ken Supski.

The year ended with the unusually tough tournament in Helsinki. In the starting match, Henkka won the most promising American player - Ryan Harrison - 7-6, 6-2. In the second round, he won the top 100 player Dustin Brown for the second time in the year. In semifinals, after a hard fight, he lost to a French top 100 player Adrian Mannarino. The last match of the season was the doubles finals with Jarkko Nieminen as his pair. All in all, in 2010, Henkka went through three big injuries but in spite of that, he managed to improve his ranking. The highest ranking of the season in singles was ATP-220 and in the end, ATP-273. In doubles, Henkka ended the season with a ranking in top 300, even though he only played a few tournaments. The most interesting figure of the year's statistics can be found in the singles matches that were resolved in the third or fifth sets. These matches Henkka won 11 out of 15.

2009 - The First Year as a Professional Player

Start of Season: Getting the Touch

After the successful breakthrough year, Henri was facing the most demanding challenge for a tennis player - his first year as a professional player in men's tournaments.

The season began in February in Croatian future where Henri was mainly getting used to pro surroundings. After this, in Davis Cup and together with Jarkko Nieminen, Henri had an important victory in doubles that helped Finland continue. In March in Great Britain, the road was leading upwards with titles with Daniel Evans. The spring went on at a challenger tournament in Sarajevo where Henri reached the main draw. Facing Marius Copil, Henri solved 6 match points and eventually, he won the tie break 14-12. In the main draw, against Haider-Maurer, Henri won the first set 6-1, the result being like a warning of what was to come during the latter half of the season.

In the spring, Henri went on to play at Rhodes Challenger Tournament where he received a wild card to the main draw. It was not quite the time for success yet but he was getting closer. After the Kuwait futures in the boiling heat of May, Henkka went on to play in a more cooling climate of Norway, reaching quarter finals twice in the singles futures. From the land of cods, the journey led to German Challenger Tournament together with Timo Nieminen. The Finns were to play against each other! Henkka won the exciting match and Timo gave him a good resistance. In the next run, Kamke proved to be stronger than Henri but all in all, the first season had had a good start.

End of Season: Reaching Results

In July in Naantali Davis Cup, Finland was defeating Monaco. At the deciding match, Henkka rose to a completely new level with his playing and there was a rare Finnish DC rapture in the air. This was a good start for the clay court season. In the turn of August, in Tampere, Henkka reached a challenger singles quarter finals for the first time. The season continued in Lithuania futures where Henri took the first titles at a men's singles tournament. A couple of weeks after the Vierumäki futures, it was the time for hard court tournaments.

In September, Henri played important DC rising matches with Cyprus defeating. Henri gained important experience when he played against Marcos Baghdatis, a former top 10 player. Henri and Jarkko Nieminen took the match rising from 0-2 to 3-2. In the last singles on Sunday, Henri once again held the keys to solution: he won Photos Kalliasis 3-0 and thus, Finland had finally found its way back to 1st division and back to reach new, more demanding goals.

In German futures in October, Henri played all the way to the finals where he slightly lost to Polish Przysiezny 2-1. After that, he reached semifinals with Jarkko Nieminen as his partner in Kolding challenger tournament in Denmark. Next destination was the qualifying in the Stockholm ATP tournament where Henri took the necessary three matches thus reaching the main draw. Henri was now playing his first ATP singles match vs. Michael Berrer. The match was close, the German being slightly more accurate and thus winning. Because he had to experience slight losses, Henri became persistent in proceeding all the way to winning the titles in Cardiff, Wales's futures singles, and did it without losing a set. While making his way there, he won many tough players such as Przysiezny, D. Evans and Mertens.

In November in Jersey, Henri continued good performances beating both Bastl and Bohli. Finally, a long-awaited encounter took place in the quarter finals where Henri played against Jarkko Nieminen for the first time. In quite an even match, Jarkko won but only 6-4, 6-4. In doubles, the Finns made their way to the finals. The last tournament of the season took place at Henri's home hall, Tali Tennis Centre in Helsinki. Henri took his first top 100 victory by beating Michael Berrer of Germany in the opening and eventually, Henri faced Jarkko Nieminen again in the quarter finals. In front of the full house, Henri beat his Finnish forerunner 7-6, 6-4. In semi finals, Henri defeated Bohli again but this time, the Swiss was having a better day. All in all, Henri achieved 40 ATP important points in singles. In doubles, Henri and Jarkko reached to the finals, achieving 65 ATP points.

After his first professional year, Henri's main achievements included ATP ranking 288 in singles and ATP 248 in doubles. Fairly impressive, considering that he started from ranks 1823 and 590. In singles, his rise was the best of the year 2009! Still in December, Henri won the Swedish team championship as a member of the SALK of Stockholm. Among others he won A. Vinciguerra, the second best player of the Swedish national team, twice. The most significant figures of Henri's pro year can be found in the tie break statistics: During the season, Henri played 26 tie breaks in singles when counting all the matches, and he won 20 of them.

Breakthrough year 2008

After he had finally healed from his persistent knee ache, Henri started his successful last junior year participating in Asian hardcourt tournaments in March, advancing all the way through becoming the G2 tournament winner in Indonesia. Right next week from that, Henri made it to G1 final in Thailand. Henri still had time to travel to England where he achieved a Future level doubles victory with his partner Harri Heliövaara. In April, Henri was invited to participate in the Finnish Davis Cup team, when he was only 17 years of age. He made his debut as Jarkko Nieminen's partner in Saturday's doubles against a top South African pair and got also a chance to play the last singles on Sunday.

After all this, Henkka headed towards the European claycourt tournaments. He achieved great success in doubles, winning three G1 titles, but in singles, his grip was not quite as good. At the first Grand Slam of his career, French Open, he was defeated on the first round in singles but continued his excellent performance in doubles: he won the title with Indonesian Christopher Rungkat without losing a set.

In June, Henri travelled to play at British grass tournaments and was invited to play at the legendary Queen's Club where he at once won two matches, advancing thus to semifinals. At Roehampton  G1, he also advanced to semifinals in singles, and won a title in doubles, which was an excellent stepping stone to the main event of the year, Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament. In Wimbledon, Henri won four matches before confronting the first ranked Bernard Tomic in semifinals. Henkka defeated Tomic 7-6, 6-4. In the final, Henkka had to yield to Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 5-7, 3-6. The last two matches were shown live on a Finnish national television channel.

In July, Henri returned to claycourts. He became the hero of Finland when he won the last decisive singles match against Luxembourg at Davis Cup. Next week in Austria, Henri participated in European Championships of the 18-year-olds where he played his best clay tournament reaching the final. A busy month continued at a challenger tournament in Tampere, Finland, where he advanced to the doubles' final again with Harri Heliövaara.
The final junior year ended with hardcourt tournaments in North America. In Canada G1 and US Open, Henri advanced to the doubles final. In singles, Henri advanced to quarter finals.
